LASER REFRACTIVE SURGERY
Refractive surgery is the surgery
to correct sight problems like short sight, long
sight etc. in the past this was achieved with a
knife and the dexterity of the individual surgeon.
The procedure used to be called radial keratotomy
(RK). The disadvantage with this procedure is that
this can only be used for lower powers of myopia
(short sight also) and there are permanent scars
left on the cornea which could lead to glare etc.
this is now replaced by lasers and is now laser
refractive surgery. Once again the treatment is in
the cornea. The major advantage to the refractive
surgery is that it uses computer controlled laser
instead of knife and mechanical devices like
microkeratome instead of hanks. Therefore, the
procedure is highly refined and the results are
extraordinarily accurate, without scarring. More
important we can have not only myopia but
hyperopia and astigmatism.
What is cornea?
Cornea is the transparent
structure in the front of the dark part of the
eye. Its very much like the watch glass. If you
notice the watch the color i.e.., the black or
white dial comes from behind. But in reality there
is a protective glass in front. Similarly in the
dark part of the eye, the color comes from behind
and the transparent dome like structure in the
front is the cornea. Any kind of refractive
surgery is generally done on the cornea. The
central thickness of the cornea is normally above
500µ and if it is below this no refractive surgery
should be done. Under the work laser refractive
surgery we at Maxivision offer 4 different kinds
of procedure. PRK, Zyoptix-PRK, Lasik,
Zyoptix-Lasik.
What if you are not suitable
for laser refractive surgery?
This is when we offer Phakic IOLs
and Bioptic procedure.
